The Pediatric Metabolic Clinic at MCAM provides a team approach consisting of a board certified pediatrician who is also board certified in obesity medicine and a pediatric dietitian. Our focus is to improve a child’s health and well-being by looking at the many potential facets of pediatric weight gain including medical disorders, nutritional consumption, psychological contributors, physical activity and social support. We utilize a family centered approach to help create a healthy environment that allows for successful achievement of a healthy lifestyle.
Our focus is to:
- Provide support for a healthy weight and lifestyle
- Identify healthy weight expectations while maintaining a positive body image
Our services include:
- Weight gain support for children 18 years of age and younger who have:
- Concerns for excessive weight gain
- Overweight or body mass index (BMI) between the 85th and 94th percentile for age
- Obesity or BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile for age
- Obesity/overweight related co-morbidities
- Evaluation for potential causes of obesity or excessive weight gain
- Dietitian services
- Evaluation/Treatment for the following obesity related co-morbidities:
- Prediabetes
- Hypertension
- Fatty Liver
- Hyperlipidemia
- Weight loss medication
- Medication will only be prescribed if medically and age appropriate and is mutually agreed upon by the treating physician and the patient
- Addressing factors related to weight gain:
- Eating behaviors
- Emotional health
- Portion sizes
- Inactivity
- Sleep
- Food choices/availability
